ORION Hypar Shade Sail
Where the primary objective for a covered space is shade from the sun and UV protection, the ORION Hypar Shade Sail canopy is a cost-effective and visually appealing choice. With a wide range of vibrant colours available, sails can be grouped together to create a stunning design theme – perfect for brightening up school playgrounds and outdoor seating areas.
The commercial grade shade cloths with single colour filaments provide consistent colour tone and texture throughout the sail. They offer a very high level of UV protection with 91% – 95% block, and are made from UV stabilised materials, ensuring that the fabric of the shade sails will continue to perform even after years of exposure to the elements. The super tough abrasion resistant yarn offers excellent longevity with resistance to grime, mildew and dirt.
Sail shade canopies are not rated for snow loading, so this product utilises 316 grade stainless steel fixings for ease of removal and retensioning. If all year round weather protection is required, consider the ORION Hypar fabric canopy.

How much protection do shade sails offer from the sun?
ORION Hypar Shade Sails offer a high degree of protection blocking between 91%-95% of harmful UV rays from the sun. The fabric is UV stabilised ensuring the shade sail will continue to offer long-term protection from harmful UV rays.
What kind of fabric is used for shade sails?
ORION Hypar Shade Sails use commercial-grade shade cloth fabric manufactured from High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) monofilament and tape filament. All filament (or yarn) is lockstitch knitted together providing a very high-strength fabric which is then heat set, for dimensional stability and consistency.
Are shade sail canopies waterproof?
Our shade-only sails are not waterproof. The shade sail cloth is manufactured to provide excellent protection from UV rays. If protection from both rain & sun is required we offer the ORION Waterproof Hypar Canopy which uses an architectural PVC fabric which is fully waterproof.
What colour choices are available for shade sail fabric?
ORION Hypar shade sail fabric is available with a range of fourteen UV-stable colours, providing plenty of scope to create vibrant covered spaces, particularly when multiple shade sails are grouped together.
What is the maximum size for an individual shade sail?
ORION Hypar Shade Sails are avaialble in dimensions up to 8.0m x 8.0m. Rectangular shade sails can also be accommodated.

Is planning required for the installation of shade sails?
Planning requirements will depend on the location, size and specification of the project. Subject to meeting the appropriate criteria, many canopies may be installed under permitted development rights for schools. Our team can help with the planning permission process.
Can Hypar Shade Sails be taken down in winter?
ORION Hypar Shade Sails aren’t rated for snow loading so can be taken down in winter. 316 grade steel fixings are used to make the removal & retensioning process straightforward.
What maintenance do shade sails require?
A commercial-grade shade sail cloth is used as it offers excellent resistance to grime, mildew and dirt keeping maintenance needs to a minimum. Across the lifetime of the shade sail periodic cleaning should be carried out to remove debris or dirt. Location will play a part in determining cleaning frequency. For example, shade sails located close to trees may require more frequent cleaning than shade sails located in open areas.
Do shade sails need re-tensioning?
Once in place, re-tensioning will not be necessary. Our shade sails use a hyperbolic design using tensioning points on opposing corners. Cast-in steel columns are used to provide the required tension.
How long will a shade sail last?
Our shade sails are designed using super tough, abrasion-resistant yarn and stainless steel tensioning hardware to ensure years of daily use no matter the elements. Our shade sail tensile membrane fabric comes with a warranty of 15 years while the steel frame has a warranty of 25 years.
