Outdoor classrooms are adaptable environments, helping schools meet changing curriculum requirements and making learning more engaging for young people. As a natural extension of teaching space, outdoor classrooms also provide valuable facilities for informal learning through play.

With many designs of canopy structure available, a flexible design process and an extensive range of enclosure options, Streetspace is an obvious choice for outdoor classrooms.

What Are the Benefits of Outdoor Classrooms?

Helping enhance pupils’ personal and social skills outside the conventional classroom, the enriching natural environment, variety of outlook and plentiful fresh air can benefit physical health and improve mental wellbeing.

Canopies are permanent structures providing flexible covered space that can accommodate a range of activities in addition to planned outdoor learning. Streetspace canopies have been used to host external speakers, religious services and dance classes as well as local community events on weekends and evenings.

The existence of an annual outdoor classroom awareness day is a sign of increasing recognition of the benefits of outdoor education. Outdoor Classroom Day is a global movement, celebrated on two dates each year, encouraging teachers to bring more teaching and play outdoors as a regular part of their pupils’ day. Though certain learning elements are better suited to the outdoors than others, there are lessons that can be conducted year round with sufficient shelter in place. Enclosed canopies can enable teaching in safe, dry and temperate learning environments with the benefits of being out in the fresh air.

What Streetspace Canopies Can You Select for an Outdoor Classroom?

Barrel Vault canopies create clear-span covered space with consistent eaves protection from the radius roof tensile fabric membrane cover system making the design well suited to stand alone outdoor classrooms. For additional protection, they can be enclosed with sides and further enhanced with lighting, heating for comfortable all-year-round use.

Asymmetric Polycarbonate and Monopitch Polycarbonate canopies are designed for outdoor classrooms that adjoin existing buildings, where the location is suited to a straightforward transition from indoors to outdoors and the available space is limited. For year round use, both canopies can include glass or polycarbonate vertical cladding for school grounds that are more exposed to the elements.

Tensile fabric canopies including the Conic, Shield, Star, Hypar Fabric and Hypar Shade create visually striking outdoor classrooms providing both shade and shelter. The Conic canopy design can be specified with fixed eaves enabling perimeter windbreak cladding to be fitted. The Shield, Star and Hypar canopies protect from rain and UV rays with the eaves height less well suited to windbreak fitting. All tensile fabric canopies are waterproof but only the Conic and Barrel Vault incorporate rainwater management systems.
